"My only wish is that we found them sooner"

"We found Bear Basics Academy through a recommendation from a friend who also uses their services for dog training, and my only wish is that we found them sooner. We wasted 18 months and a lot of money on trainers who followed a one size fits all or avoidance method when managing reactivity and leash frustration, and not only did we not make any progress, but our lives were fairly limited as a result. Now, I can comfortably and confidently take my dog Eric (working line Labrador rescue) to most places and know that after a quick tune up of his behaviours, we're going to have a good day. We have online coaching with Nick and also attend the Neutrality walks and the group classes, which have been invaluable for working through Eric's reactivity, and I never NEVER thought we'd be able to get to the point we're at now where he can heel walk, engage, and play in the middle of a pack of dogs. His confidence as grown exponentially. The community Nick and Yas have built is that of supportive and open minded dog owners who appreciate the struggles of dog ownership and treat each other with compassion and respect. With Bear Basics, the journey is just as big a part of the process as achieving a goal. I've learnt so much and learn something new almost daily. I owe our re-found freedom to these sessions and I'm excited for what's to come. Thanks for your patience and guidance and for having us as part of the academy."

  • Where are you based?
We are based in Wakefield, West Yorkshire and provide. Our sessions are normally held at Heath Common, WF1 5SE.
  • What training methods do you use?
Here at Bear Basics, we don't tend to adhere to one specific 'label', rather we treat each dog as an individual with their own specific needs. With us having a holistic training approach, we look at the greater picture and focus on other elements, rather than just the obvious behaviours your dog is showing. Our mission is to educate owners, change mindsets, build strong, trusting relationships between dogs and their owners. Due to our approach to training, we also like to make use of all the quadrants of operant conditioning.
  • What makes you unique?
We take a holistic approach that goes beyond simply changing behaviours. By understanding the deeper reasons behind your dog’s actions, we address the root causes to create lasting change. Our mission is to equip you with the confidence and skills to be a capable dog handler. We offer ongoing support throughout your training journey, focusing on real-life situations to ensure you and your dog are ready for anything you might face. We also have one of the best, supportive dog training communities out there!
  • What breeds do you work with?
All of them! Working with thousands of dogs, we've had the smallest of breeds (chihuahua's) right up to the biggest of breeds (African Mastiff). We also accommodate any behavioural issue from any breed.
  • What is your cancelation / refund policy?
Head to our T&C's page to see all our cancellation and refund policies, as well as our terms and conditions. Different services have different policies so make sure you read it thoroughly.
  • What do I need to bring?
Commonly, we require clients to come with a suitable treat pouch, their dogs regular walking equipment, a longline (if needed) and their favourite toy!
